AU celebrated the Year of the Horse in a grand party full of games, entertainment and fun. On February 2nd, 2002, Asian Unity members hosted their annual Lunar New Year Party with a variety of Asian foods and prizes. For a little peek at what went on, click here. On January 20th, Asian Unity members once again attended the Stamp Out Hate Teen Conference at Short Hills, New Jersey. For a little celebration at the holidays, on December 29th, Asian Unity Members went eating out at the local Miss Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant. Very good food. Afterwards, we went to ice skate at the Pershing Field Arena. Some were excellent skaters. Others, the less fortunate, had a lot of pains in their behinds from constant falls. Here are some photos. As an activity for the Christmas of 2001, AU went to carol at the Saint Joseph's Home for the Blind in Jersey City as well as St. Mary's Hospital in Hoboken on December 21st. Around twenty members attended and it was a lot of fun. To see us in Santa hats, Click Here! Although not profession singers, we were able to get our notes straight through a whole month of grueling practice under the tutorage of our choir master Sea Ah. See some pics of us. As a special present to all AU members, the executive officers, Christopher Chin, Robert He, Joanna Wu, Tran Vo, Sea Ah Lim, and with the help of Nidhi Dharithreesan, ironed transfers of AU T-shirts until around 11:15 PM at the International Institute of New Jersey. It was an interesting experience. So many tragic things happened in the past few months that many families were affected. In order to look on the bright side of things, on November 17th, 2001, AU organized a mural painting at the Hoboken Boys and Girls Club. Kids of all ages came together to demonstrate what they are "Proud to be..." Here's some scenes from the event. According to the Lunar Calendar, the 15th of the 8th month is a time of celebration. This year, the day falls upon October the 1st. Traditionally, on this day, Asian families come together to celebrate the mid-autumn festival. After gathering the harvest, it is time for the workers to relax, give thanks and admire the moon. However, in the face of recent tragedies, Asian Unity, instead of holding a party, took the opportunity to raise money for the September 11th fund. Handing out pamphlets that informed its readers on the origins of the Asian festival, and selling prepackaged moon cakes, AU was able to raise over 300 dollars on October 8th at Hamilton Park! To see the members hard at work, click here! The incident on September 11th, 2001 brought much sorrow. Many people lost their lives and the New York skyline lost the twin towers. Yet, this tragedy also brought Americans together, as volunteers streamed in from every corner of the globe to help. AU wish to express our sympathies to the families who lost people in the disaster and to thank all the volunteers for giving their time and love. See the outpouring of kindness on the New Jersey side of the Hudson! On June 24th, AU hosted our annual Summer Picnic at Bayonne Park. Food was plenty, and so were the fun and the water balloons. We even had a reporter from the World Journal come and join us. Want a peek at what we did (before we got wet)? Then click here! Since the seniors would be going away, we will be having new officers. Congratulations everyone!!! In order to thank the seniors for what they did for AU, we all planned a not-so-secret karaoke party in a Vegetarian Restaurant at Chinatown. We all had loads of fun and even the tight ride (8 to a car) could not dampen our spirits. Want to know why? Click here! May was Asian Heritage Month. In celebration, AU members hosted workshops at McNair Academic High School on the 30th, during lunch periods in areas such as Chinese calligraphy, origami, anime drawing, and chopstick holding. Click here for photos! Remember the NYU thing? Many of the AU members went to the workshops on April 28th. It was really fun. We went to Chinatown afterwards, after some cotton candy. Click here for more details and pictures. April 21st was National Volunteer Day. Did you participate? Well, AU members did some work at the Boys and Girls Club in Jersey City. Check out the pics of our mural here! Our meeting on April 12th took place at a Japanese Restaurant where one of the most interesting things that happened was Robert eating a whole chunk of Wasabi sauce and turning bright pink. We all wished that we had a camera. What a spectacle! Of course, on our way back, all the seven of those who went had to cram in a single car...Whew...was it stuffy! Interested in an Asian Pacific American Youth Culture Forum at NYU? Well, email us for more information on how you can get an application. Too lazy to email? Post at our public message board under the thread Welcome. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend the workshops, which include movies, anime, fashion, and food! STAMP OUT HATE - Four members representing AU attended a workshop/teen conference on April 1st. Here are some pics. We receive the Best Buy grant check on March 10th. Want to see some photos? We wish to announce our newest members: Tommy and Jack, and the opening of a message board. The party on February 3rd was truly entertaining and fun. For all those that could not attend, you can always see the pictures. Yippeeeeee! We got the grant and will therefore use it to improve our programs in the future. Recently, we applied for a grant of 2,500 dollars. We will tell you if we got it or not in the future, but in the meantime, let's all hope for the best. Chinese New Year is coming up. It will be here on January 24th. In celebrating of our Asian culture, we will be hosting a Lunar New Year Party on February 3rd. We encourage all to attend. If you are interested, please email the Asian Unity Association for more information. We made some money on a recent poster fund-raiser. Thanks to all those who participated! |
