| Asian Heritage Month was set in May by Jeannie Jew, a third generation Chinese American in the late 1800's. Jeannie and her friend, Ruby Moy, went to Capitol Hill to campaign for Asian rights. Then in 1977, the APA Heritage Week was introduce. President George Bush later extended it to an entire month in 1992. Why May? Well, the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the U.S. in May 1843 and the transcontinental railroad, which was built with the help of many Chinese immigrants, was also completed in May, on the 10th in 1869.
